Access China
Make your website work in China and get access to over 1 billion potential customers
Jump the Great Firewall
You have probably been told, that your website can’t be accessed in China and therefore those 1+ billion internet users are out of reach. This is wrong.
What the Western media often calls the Great Chinese Firewall is usually not actively targeting Western shops or website. So if you know what you are doing, your website should load in Mainland China.
This is where I can help:
About Me – The WordPress China Expert
Hi, my name is Wolfgang Geiger.
I grew up in Austria, studied in the UK & Beijing, spent a year in Australia and have been living in Hong Kong now for 10+ years.
I’m literally hopping between the West, Hong Kong and Mainland China and in the process make WordPress websites for a living – in all of the mentioned regions.
This has provided me with unique knowledge of how to make Western websites accessible in Mainland China.
Here is how it works:
You can think of the Great Chinese Firewall as a set of rules similar to what you have to obey when travelling to another country.
You might, for example, be allowed to bring fresh fruits when travelling from France to Germany. You won’t be allowed to do that when travelling to Australia.
In a similar way, Mainland China is allowing data packages from certain domains and servers, and blocks packages from others.
What you have to do with your website is to make sure everything is loaded from your server directly, not via Google, Facebook, WordPress.com or GStatic (and some more).
This, in combination with a generally well performing website, and you’re ready to tackle the Mainland market.
Things I don’t do:
I strictly work on optimizing websites outside of Mainland China. You won’t need an ICP license, a Chinese server, a Chinese domain, a Chinese nameserver, a special CDN or anything similar that other services will ask you to purchase. I will work exclusively on your website directly.
Depending on your situation, there are things I can’t fix or help with. These include:
- I won’t be able to un-ban a domain that is banned
- I won’t be able to make your DNS work in China. If your website is not even starting to load and the problem is not the server, then I might not be able to help
Chinese rules and regulations change constantly and there are times during which rules get stricter (e.g. around political meetings in Beijing). As a result, circumstances might change and my optimizations might stop working in the future. This is out of my control, I hope you understand.
How to get started
The easiest way to get started is to get in touch with me. After that, I can have a look at your website and advise how to proceed.
Alternatively, you can click on my Codeable Partner Link to get to my profile there and start a project with me as the dedicated developer.
I will post everything I know about optimizing websites for China on this website over the next months and years. If you don’t want to spend money, you can go through the blog posts or the tutorial and make the changes yourself.
